John Drew was my favorite player growing up. He and I share the same birthday. I thought that was cool and I liked the way he played. Didn't know about all of the drug problems until later. Sounds like he is doing well now.

I attended the same high school as John Drew. (J.F.Shields), in Beatrice,Alabama.I played basketball with his niece and got to witness the greatness of his nephews. Although he had a drug addiction, that did not make him any less of a notable mention of all time NBA greats. People are so quick to judge a person based on their problems or addictions. Everyone has skeletons in their lives,,,,the only difference between you and John Drew is that his addiction was made public and yours isn't.

John Drew picked us in his cab in downtown Houston Friday night January 7, 2011 and took to a restaurant. He is very up beat and friendly as well as knowledgeable of the Houston area. He bragged of his wife of 13 years. I would say he is his doing great. He is bigger than life and a very passonite man. It was a great ride and visit !

11.10.2010 - got a ride in John's cab today in Houston. He has his study bible with him in the cab, and was happy to share his thoughts on the gospel .... Interesting guy and very much alive and well....

Good article on John Drew .... I worked on the "stats" crew for an NBA team - yesterday (02-17-2010) - I ran into a fellow who had a tryout with the team I worked for. Being on the "stats" crew was fun - it was a labor of love $10.00 a game - and two season tickets - plus, access to all of the players for autographs. Anyway, this gentleman I was speaking to mentioned the name of a player - who he said was homless and living on the streets of Los Angeles. I won't mention his name as first, he was a great guy and second, I couldn't verify the story I was told that "this player" was homeless. I just hope this guy I spoke with at the Doctors office was wrong - as the player he mentioned - as I said was always a gentleman to everyone.

Have known John since 1989. Helped my husband when he was in treatment and then he relapsed. Had a huge strugge, but does drive a cab, has a beautiful wife and daughters, and is still sober.

It was interesting to find about John Drew's career. Drew is a friendly guy and he does drive a cab in Houston. I'v met him on several occassions. He's an upbeat spirit. Everyone he meets leaves him with a smile on their faces. I have a great deal of respect for John, at least he is still with us and sane. He showed his championship abilities when chose sobriety. He's still a winner.

I had heard of him, but only because I use this site too much and ran a search on guys with high usage and relatively low minutes (Freeman Williams, the guy he was traded with, is also on that list). Very interesting but sad article.
