In the evolutionary chain of APBRmetrics, PER is probably the best descendant of Dave Heeren's TENDEX, but I'd like to think we've all largely moved past TENDEX-type formulas by this point. Now, that's not to say it isn't useful as a quick-n-dirty metric in the absence of more modern ones, however.

No offense to John, whom I respect tremendously as a writer, but I'm not a huge fan of PER and don't particularly care to use it if I don't have to.

Actually it would be interesting to see the SPM for as many finals MVPs as possible, just to see how they stack up. I have a feeling Shaq might wind up top of the hill.
