If Tim Thomas has a loving family and circle of friends, that's good.

I rate Thomas as a completely average player during his regular seasons. In playoffs, he's tended to raise his rates about as much as anyone in history. His 25.2 minutes per game is also pretty average.

His career playoff rates are about 11% better than his season rates. A typical player only gets about 94%, after pace adjustments.

Relative to other players in those same playoff games, he's been some 18% better than what he's been during the season. With the stats he has, I have him ranked as the 373th-best statistical career.

But if he should have been 18% better all along, rather than just in playoffs, he might have averaged more minutes -- say, 35. And by better regular-season play, he might have gotten into more playoffs, so let's boost that by 40%. Now he ranks #247.

This still is nowhere near Kobe territory; it's among sometime-stars like Rudy LaRusso, Rudy T, Jeff Mullens, Dale Davis, Juwan Howard, Bob Love ...

Great writeup, Neil.
