Layups: HoopsAnalyst’s Award Picks

Posted by Neil Paine on April 10, 2009

In the latest post over at HoopsAnalyst, Harlan Schreiber lays out his picks for the 2008-09 NBA awards. But that's not really why I linked -- instead, I like the table he has under his Rookie of the Year pick, which compares the RoYs since 1979-80 to which player from that rookie class had the best career. You may not agree with all of his "best career" selections, but it's still a pretty fascinating list.

One thing I miss from the old B-R Labs is the ability to look at cumulative stats for players in a given draft class.

Anytime this kind of work done it thought provoking courageous. Im sure he finds more people disagreeing with him than agreeing with him. I just applaud the effort and thoroughness.

What this list prooves beyond a doubt is that some drafts suck.

I am not sure some of the recent drafts where the 'best' player has proved to be a high schooler are a valid comparison. Kobe sucked in his rookie season, Dwight and others were soooo not NBA ready when drafted...
