Layups: Simmons on the Offseason
Posted by Neil Paine on July 30, 2009
In the style of this hilarious piece he did a few summers back, ESPN's always-entertaining Bill Simmons brings us his takes on the offseason's biggest storylines using quotes from "Almost Famous". From a statistical perspective I don't always agree with what he writes, but it's still always worth reading, if not simply for the humor and the references.

I disagree. Simmons has jumped the shark several years ago. He isn't funny anymore.

I was reading that yesterday. It was a good read. What he wrote before this one about the status of refereeing in the NBA was interesting (and apt) as well.

It's hilarious to me how Bill claims that Nash is top 40 ever and Iverson is top 30 ever without any sort of rationale. I like the simple fact that he devotes so much time and attention to my favorite sport (and I'll probably read his book for that reason), but his judgment regarding players is highly suspect and extremely subjective.

Oh, of course. Now, if we could get somebody with Simmons' sense of humor and knowledge of pop-culture, plus an APBRmetric understanding of the game, then you'd really have something.

You mean like if Simmons and Hollinger were to meld together and become one mind?

Neil - All you have to do is watch upwards of 10 hours of television per day and in time you could become that guy.

Simmons is a fantastic comedic writer. He worked as a staff writer on the Jimmy Kimmell show before. I don't always agree with his opinions (like when he said Jared Dudley was the best player on Charlotte's roster a few years ago) but I'm always entertained by his wit.

I think he understands the game really well, he just overreacts to so many things presumably in the name of comedy.
