Few teams in the league better encapsulated pseudo-contender mediocrity than the '09-'10 Dallas Mavericks, who won 55 games while doing many things well, but few spectacularly. Dallas ranked 10th in the NBA in offensive efficiency and 12th in defensive efficiency last season, and a closer look into the team's performance in each of the Four Factors reveals few exemplary marks; the Mavs took care of the ball and fouled rarely. Both of those attributes are undoubtedly positive, but if Dallas wants to take a leap forward in the coming year, they'll have to improve in many other aspects of their overall performance.
Oddly enough, the Mavericks could very well do so, despite the fact that they made just one notable off-season move. Dallas acquired Tyson Chandler in exchange for Erick Dampier earlier this summer, but the move that would enable the Mavs to improve in the coming year was actually made months prior. The internal hope is that with time to appropriately adjust to Rick Carlisle's system, trade deadline acquisitions Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood will be more effective for Dallas than ever. That hope isn't entirely misguided, as their post-deadline experience and a full training camp will undoubtedly aid in Butler and Haywood's on-court chemistry with their teammates.
Dallas could find additional improvement in Rodrigue Beaubois' development, as the rookie dynamo has a chance to become a rotation regular for Rick Carlisle this season. Beaubois was very effective for the Mavs last year in limited minutes, and if his per-minute production of a year ago extrapolates over some proper burn, Dallas could be significantly improved without adding much via trade or free agency.
