BBR News: Player and Team Streak Finders

Posted by Justin Kubatko on March 30, 2010

I would like to announce the addition of two new tools to the BBR Play Index: the Player Streak Finder and the Team Streak Finder. Please read on for more information.

With the Player Streak Finder, you can search through player game logs spanning from 1986-87 to today for player streaks that match your criteria. Let me state up front that calculating player streaks is computationally intensive, so you will not be able to search more than six seasons at a time. However, I still believe that the tool will prove to be incredibly valuable. For example, much was made of Kevin Durant's streak of 29 games with 25 or more points this season. Has any other player put up a similar streak in the last six seasons? The Player Streak Finder has the answer for you.

The Team Streak Finder allows you to search through team game logs spanning from 1946-47 to today for team streaks that match your criteria. Unlike the Player Streak Finder, there is no restriction on the number of seasons that can be searched. Why? Because our team game logs table has a little over 100,000 records (that count includes all NBA and ABA games from 1946-47 through yesterday), while our player game logs table has almost 550,000 records (that count includes all NBA games from 1986-87 through yesterday). In other words, complete team searches are much faster than complete player searches. Just to give you an idea of what you can do with the Team Streak Finder, here are some sample queries:

I hope you enjoy these new tools. If you have any comments or questions, please post them here or fill out our feedback form.

Exactly which pages (i.e. the URLs) are you having problems on? I ran a few sample queries on the Play Index and it seems to be working fine:

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/tiny.cgi?id=PJBl9

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/tiny.cgi?id=s1kpU

Also, the league pages seem to be working fine:

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2010.html

We take reports like yours very seriously, but I need to know where specifically the problem is.
