The (APBRmetric) Top 593 Players of 2012

Watching one of the NFL Network's "Top 100 Players of 2011" shows this weekend, I was inspired to create a similar list for the NBA using APBRmetric stats. But why stop at 100? Instead, I ranked all 593 players who played at least 1 NBA game since 2008-09.

The metrics of choice are roughly the same as I use for the annual APBRmetric All-Star posts:

  • PER: Perhaps the most visible APBRmetric stat out there.
  • Win Shares per 48 minutes (WS48): Basketball-Reference's all-in-one rate stat of choice
  • Basketball-on-Paper Statistical +/- (bopSPM): An SPM variant explained at the bottom of this page; by using only MPG/ORtg/%Pos/DRtg, it is less biased toward PGs (or any other position) than ordinary SPM
  • Multiyear Regularized Adjusted +/- (RAPM): The best version of adjusted +/- currently available to the public.

I ran each boxscore metric through the Simple Projection System process, creating an expected rate for each player in 2012. For RAPM, I applied the SPS's aging adjustment to the predictive ranking found at Jeremias' site.

Each player was ranked according to each metric. I then (arbitrarily) applied the "Russian Judge Method" of discarding a player's high and low ranking, added the two remaining ranks, and re-ranked according to those totals. The results:

    Can we come up with a different acronym for RAPM? That looks way too close for RAPE for my liking, which makes me automatically pronounce it as "Rape 'em" instead of "Rap-um"

    I see what you mean, though. I suppose "RPM" -- regularized plus-minus -- would work as a replacement, since it doesn't seem like anyone uses "rebounds per minute" as a rate stat (it's almost always per-36 or per-48 minutes instead). What does everyone else think? I wonder if Joe Sill or Jeremias have any preference?

    yeah, I've always disliked "RAPM" since it looks so much like "RAPE." More recently I've been writing "rAPM."

    Love the basketball-on-paper SPM! Nice to see some more people trying it :) I like it since DRTG explains variation in defensive APM way better than most other attempts.

    Also - Neil, you might find better R^2 values by utilizing ORTG*pctpos instead of ORTG...in almost all of my BoP SPM studies, this is the case.

    Pros to changing the acronym for RAPM:

    -The acronym would no longer look like RAPE, RAP or RAMP. RPM is the obvious alternative, although I personally see that as revolutions or rebounds per minute.

    Cons to an acronym change:

    -Established naming convention - Plus Minus (PM), Adjusted Plus Minus (APM), Regularized or Regressed Adjusted Plus Minus (RAPM), Statistical Plus Minus (SPM). This suggests that RAPM is a variety of APM but SPM is not, which is an accurate sketch of the metric family tree.

    What do you know, Bron comes in 1st in yet another statistics that measures a player's greatness but listening to the media after the finals, you would have swore that Bron wasn't even a top-20 player let alone the undisputed best player.

    Well Seventeen, I'm convinced this is because most people only have a passing interest in the NBA and only pay attention to highlights and who wins in the later rounds. The media does a good job of representing this point of view in interviews, columns, MVP voting and game packaging. The NBA media might be obsessed with their sport but they don't write like it - platitudes and pandering are the norm.

    Three teams (Lakers, Spurs, Heat) each had two players in the top 2. They had 3 of the best 4 records in the league.

    What do the numbers look like if you don't do the "Russian Judge Method" and eliminate highest and lowest? Any major changes? Looks like a few guys could get really screwed by their RAPM, particularly younger guys and/or guys coming off injuries (Love and Bynim in the 300's!).

    In general I like to analyze stats, but I must say the ratings above prove yes you do have to consider stats of individual players when comparing them, but you can't take the numbers to the bank like you can in baseball. Case in point..Nene and Chris Bosh bring ranked ahead of Rose. I think the closest to the best statistical measure for players would be a combination of PER and Defensive Win Shares since defensive ability is not measured within the complicated PER formula. Going off that, the top 5 players from last year would be Howard, LeBron, Wade, Rose, and Paul 5th. I definitely think Dwight Howard is more valuable than any other player to his team. They would probably fall from 3rd to around 22nd in defensive efficiency if he had missed 1/2 season or more.

    "I ranked all 593 players who played at least 1 NBA game since 2008-09."

    Derrick Rose was not that good before this season, and he wasn't the MVP this past season either. Dwight Howard is not the best player in basketball given this criteria, not even close. And if you go by PER, he doesn't win PER either......

    LeBron is by far the best player in basketball even with a bad post-season, his popularity will rise like Kobe's did one day. His career has been the best ever through age 26.

    I see. I'll admit I went right to the list and assumed it was measuring stats from last year alone. In that case, it makes more sense because Rose's metrics before last year were not anywhere near the top of the league. Dwight Howard did finish 2nd in PER this past year and is by far the most influential defensive player for his team even going back a few years. I'll admit DWS is arguably less accurate indicator than PER, becuase sometimes defensive specialists give up more pts per 100 possessions since they allow the #1 scorer to take a rest on defense. see durant/sefolosha 2008-09 season. If going off last year's stats alone Dwight could give LeBron a run since LeBron didn't put up quite as amazing numbers in Miami compared to Cleveland. The Magic would have folded up like a tent if Howard were injured for any more than 5 games at a time. I'd agree though LeBron is the best player in the game considering you could put him on any team in the league and they'd be at least 6 games over .500 regardless of supporting cast. I think with LeBron people hate him now, but if he wins championships which he'll probably win at least 2 before its all said and done, I think 6 is a stretch, he will be regarded as one of the 5 best players ever and like Shaq people he will be beloved more nationally when he's in his mid to late 30s.

    Huevonkiller-would you agree though that PER is a bit more of an accurate offensive metric than offensive win shares? I think O.W.S. tends to favor guys who might shoot 5 for 8 from the floor on most nights, boosting their offensive rating, yet if they were in a role where they had to take more shots, their pct. would go down. Likewise, Carmelo is a little bit better than off. win shares would indicate, his PER is probably more accurate for his offensive game. Defensively, well he's not going to get much better unless the Knicks fire D'Antoni and replace him with a coach who expects effort on the defensive end like Larry Brown or Scott Skiles(Skiles would actually be a great fit there and he'd probably leave Milwaukee to coach them if the Knicks pulled the trigger).

    I'm a Pacers fan, and the advanced stats for the year would definitely work against offensive win shares. Jeff Foster had more off. win shares than #3 vote getter in MVP race in O'neal and Artest.

    @22 - Finishing 1st and 7th in WS/WS48 ain't a bad playoffs - perhaps for Bron's standards. You're just dissatisfied with the team result. If he finished 5th and 10th in a Heat title you'd (irrationally) call it a good playoffs :)

    You seem like a very reasonable person overall, thank you for contributing to this discussion. I think some of the things you said are very interesting.

    In general I think it is best to use a wide assortment of metrics to rank players, because some stats can be goofy at times. If you want to use PER don't forget to adjust for usage rate (especially if you're comparing players on the same tier). For instance Jordan has 27 PER some seasons, but on a massive usage rate. He has higher peaks than Kobe but not all of Jordan's "27 PER" playoff seasons are superior to Kobe's "25-27 PER" playoff seasons (2001 and 2009). That's just one example. I like basketball on paper SPM because it incorporates usage, defense, offensive/defensive rating, minutes per game, +/- fundamentals.

    #26 I agree that Jermaine is a better offensive player, there is definitely no end-all stat. Some stats weigh the usage-efficiency tradeoff differently, in this case OWS penalizes Jermaine heavily for his 100 offensive rating.

    My ideas would be to use Neil's ranking system, but adjusting for total minutes, era (this is particularly difficult), defenses faced as well (RAPM addresses that to a degree, perhaps we need more metrics with that feature).

    Certainly you're correct, comparing All-Stars to role players is inappropriate at times.

    #28-I think you are right that +/- has to be considered as well. Going to PER, it does seem like PER does attribute a little bit to usage compared to off. win shares. For another Pacer example, Reggie Miller generally had a PER around 20-22 at the peak of his career in the 90s but at his best he was top 5 in off. win shares. Honestly, even though I really liked Reggie, I think he was more the caliber of what his PER suggested since he was never a LeBron/Jordan type that had usage rates in the 30s that could run the point, play multiple positions, grab offensive boards, and overall carry a team on his back..except for a few memorable playoff games like 8 pts in 8 seconds vs. the Knicks in 1995. The late 90s Pacers were built more like the 03-04 Pistons team that had a role for everyone in the starting lineup vs 2010-11 Heat or 91-92 Bulls team that relied on 3 guys to carry lesser players on their shoulders.

    For evaluating individual defense, you'd have to combine looking at Def. Win Shares with +/- because its hard to precisely determine how much of a win a guy like Tim Duncan contributed vs. Bruce Bowen in the Spurs defensive heyday.

    Allin all, its hard to 100% go to the bank and earn interest on stats except for baseball. I'll take a player's WAR rating - wins above replacement - and earn a good return on that one in a bad economy(well ok maybe that's taking it too far haha). I certainly favor Def. Win Shares in basketball over Off. Win Shares since as you alluded to it seems off win shares favor big men who grab off rebounds and guys who go 3 for 5 on tip ins like Jeff Foster vs. Jermaine O'Neal...or even Tyson Chandler who I think is a more valuable defensive player than offensive.

    I agree that Hill should be closer to 100-120th in terms of ranking the best players. Certainly, sabrmetrics will never be perfect..except it's extremely accurate in baseball.

    Wow, Sun Yue was ranked #184 even though Phil Jackson only allowed him to get off the bench for....I believe 29 minutes during his one season, I was rooting for him to hang in there and make it, look, he gave Sasha and Farmar 3-4 years to show they weren't reliable. He had so many things going against him, and no one cutting him any slack. Language (specifically in learning the offense and the NBA), NBA lifestyle, US lifestyle, Mononucleosis to start the year, I think a minor injury during the year (Phil was never going to use him anyway)....I think it's a shame that the Lakers did not take this player more seriously, with his variety of unconventional skills, being a 6'9" point guard, they said his jumper was as good as Sasha's practice time (not game time) jumper, his ability to chase down and block shots,......the last 6'9" point guard the Lakers had was pretty good. And he got more than 29 minutes in his first game, let alone his first season. I know this chart is "out there"....but there are some accuracies.....I like Lamar Odom at #30...he is a top player in the league. He could be a great player if he could just stay focused.
