Quad-double leaders are easy: it's only been done by 3 people since 1986 -- Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, & Alvin Robertson -- and Hakeem is the only person to do it twice. (Maybe... there's actually some dispute as to whether he legitimately had a quad-double on March 3, 1990. For the record, our records do consider that a legit 4x-double, but the league does not).
Let's move on to single seasons. Here are the most double-doubles in a season since 1986:

I'm absolutely shocked some of these guys never had triple doubles: Stockton, Marion Mourning?
April 4th, 2011 at 12:38 pm
You counted "Jason Kidd double-doubles" (reb-ast), right?
In fact, which stats count towards an official double double? How about Magic Johnson's ast-tov one? Ralph Sampson's reb-tov? Or is it all combos of the pts-reb-ast-stl-blk?
April 4th, 2011 at 12:48 pm
Turnovers aren't counted towards triple-doubles or double-doubles because they are negative stats.
April 4th, 2011 at 12:48 pm
It's any combo of pts/trb/ast/stl/blk, so Kidd-doubles are in there. Anything involving turnovers does not count. Also, in case it isn't clear, quad-doubles also count as triple- and double-doubles (but not two separate double-doubles), and triple-doubles are included in double-doubles as well.

#2 - I was surprised that Grant Hill had two triple-double seasons that were better than any LeBron ever had. Shockingly, LeBron has never had more than 7 triple-doubles in a single season.
April 4th, 2011 at 1:09 pm
Grant hill was a beast before all the injuries. he was supposed to be the next big thing, so you really shouldn't be surprised. That being said, lebron flirts with a triple double on almost a nightly basis.
April 4th, 2011 at 1:13 pm
Right, LeBron is in many ways a more evolved version of Grant Hill, but he has never come close to surpassing Grant's best single-season triple double totals.
April 4th, 2011 at 1:14 pm
Lebron doesn't rebound as well as Hill in his prime. He's better at everything else, of course.
April 4th, 2011 at 1:47 pm
Guess we can't complain about Artis Gilmore anymore....
April 4th, 2011 at 2:01 pm
Not surprised in the slightest to see Hill with two seasons over 10 trip-doubs, but I am surprised LeBron hasn't cracked 10 in a season. His averages are so close some years you'd think he'd fall into some really big nights and really small nights and get that trip-doub total higher. I guess he's more consistent than that... or he tends to have more double fig assist OR double fig rebounds rather than both together.
Didn't realize that 60% of Jordan's career triple doubles came in one season. Makes me wonder what his stats would have been like if Doug Collins had hung around and kept him as the primary ball-handler. Don't think Pippen would have reached his potential in that case though.

So I noticed the much publicized Kevin Love is the 2011 leader in Double-Doubles. So I looked at his Per Game stats and saw he has 20.2 PPG and 15.7 RPG. I decided then to look up just how many times a player has had 20 and 15 for a full season (arbitrary 65+ games as "full season").
Love is actually in some rarified and talented company. If he can hold onto 20/15 his 2011 season will be 1 of just 46 seasons with those milestone numbers. And many of those seasons are from the same guys (Chamberlain, Pettit, Jabbar, for example). Only Truck Robinson's 1977 season with the N.O. Jazz was from a non-HOF guy.
April 4th, 2011 at 3:41 pm
I'm sure there must be some statistical method to estimate the number of double/triple-doubles Chamberlain, Russell, Robertson, etc. had based on their game averages, right? Would be interesting to see that. And oh how I wish we had block and steal numbers back then. I'm sure Chamberlain had a number of quadruple-doubles in his career.
April 4th, 2011 at 4:00 pm
i think its fair to be surprised hill made the list considering the pistons used only about 80 possessions a game. how the hell you get 10 boards and 10 assists in what is essentially a high paced college game is astounding to me
April 4th, 2011 at 4:26 pm
Dwight has a chance to be the career double double leader.
April 4th, 2011 at 4:48 pm
#13, the league has that information somewhere. We know that Oscar is the all-time leader in triple-doubles, and Wilt is 4th. They just don't have the box scores before '86 on this site, or anywhere on the web
April 4th, 2011 at 8:15 pm
Lafayette Lever's totals surely are augmented by playing on the high-octane Nuggets teams of the late 80s, but are still quite impressive. It's a shame nobody ever seems to talk about him!
April 4th, 2011 at 11:43 pm
#16, Just wanted to remind that stl/blk weren't recorded when Russell, Wilt played. They had lots of blocks, and I heard Russell had many steals as well, so they should be much higher on the list, probably. I also heard, not sure about it, that the definition for assists was relaxed at some points, and many things that are considered assists today weren't recorded as such in the 60s.

The crazy thing about Jordan's 88-89 season is, he managed to reel off a record (at least since 1985) 7 consecutive triple-doubles. He also managed to get another 3 game streak with triple-doubles. In fact the streaks were only separated by a game in which MJ got 40 points,11 assists and 7 rebounds. His entire 88-89 season was simply amazing. He had 15 triple-doubles and 9 games in which he missed a triple-double by 1 assist or rebound.
April 5th, 2011 at 11:09 am
Incredible that Stockton is up near the double-double leaders... guessing that didn't come off rebounds so 69 games of double-digits in assists or steals in one year is amazing.
April 5th, 2011 at 1:50 pm
In '85 Bird was one steal away from a quadruple double when he sat the entire 4th due to a blowout.
April 5th, 2011 at 2:20 pm
There's an interesting split in positions between the doub-doub group and the trip-doub group.
There are zero SG/SF players on the top 30 career double double list. None. The closest would be Barkley and Marion who were SF/PF types, but it's really all point guards and bigs.
There are six SG/SF players on the top 15 career triple doubles list (and that's not including Bird, who is more of an SF/PF).
April 5th, 2011 at 5:40 pm
Larry Bird's 10 triple-doubles in 75 games in 1990 sticks out because he was not THAT Larry Bird anymore. He was 1 year removed from missing 76 games due to having surgery on both heels 6 games into the '88-89 season and he would only play in 105 games TOTAL in his final 2 seasons (1991 & 1992). In addition to his feet and his elbow and his fingers, he was dealing with a back that would make him lay on his stomach in front of the bench and scorer's table when he wasn't on the floor. How he was ringing up 10 trip/doubs in that state against the best of the best is incredible.

It took Artis DOUBLE the time--- THREE Xs as often as anybody else--- to get up the floor in transition.
Ahhh... the A-Train.... forver with hands cupped to his sides, thumbs up-----jogging S-L-O-W-L-Y as the trailer on the break...

I wonder how many games did Karl Malone and John Stockton both get double doubles? 550?

Sean - I LOVED watching old Larry Bird. He gave so much to that team with his rebounding, outletting (they were a fastbreak team that relied on a guy who couldn't run to get them started), and his high-post passing in the half-court. Who else could play point forward when he could barely bend to dribble? If Bird stayed functionally healthy in the playoffs in '91, I think Boston beats Detroit and gives the Bulls a serious fight in the conference finals.

GordonX - Yes, and remember....Jordan scored all those triple doubles only AFTER switching to the point guard position at the near end of the season. That is when he went on to record a triple double in 10 of 11 games. It was an experiment of sorts that the Bulls never repeated due to the inclusion of the triangle offense in the following seasons.
Amazing to think how many triple doubles he would have been able to pull off had he stayed at the point for the entire following season.
To put things into perspective, here are roughly the numbers Jordan averaged while at point guard position, (all at the end of the season too mind you)
30.7ppg (50.5% from the field)
11 apg
9.4 rpg
2.52 spg

Anyone surprised to see the name of my Sun Devil Fat Lever so high on the triple double lists? Except for me, of course. He is truly one of the NBA's least appreciated players. Not only is he high on the TD list he is ranked #17 all time in steals (sixth all time in triple doubles)And all this in 8 and one half NBA seasons (23,800 minutes)
At ASU he played with Byron Scott, who is far better known. And yet can you say that Scott actually had a better career? Now get this -- he also played with NBA journeyman center Alton Lister (#32 in blocks with 1473); and with all that talent ASU never got out of the second round of the tournament

Jason, I don't know how he did it in THAT kind of shape. His shooting % suffered, but he was still incredibly effective as long as he was out there. In 1991, Boston was 46-14 with him and 10-12 without him. I mean, I gotta lay on a hardwood floor for my back sometimes------so I can carry out the trash. Bird was doing it so he could continue getting triple-doubles in the NBA.
**From the 'Cowbell' skit on SNL: 'I put my pants on one leg at a time, just like you----only after my pants are on......I make GOLD records'--Bruce Dickenson (as played by Christopher Walken)
Bird is Dickinson. The rest of us are Wil Ferrell in BOC.

I loved Lafayette Lever. I remember trying to put together all-time starting 5's from the NCAA Field-------and I couldn't believe that ASU backcourt! And Lister was the 5. Unbelievable they didn't go farther.
