Layups: NCAA-Record 19 Grinnell Players Hit 3-Pointers in a Game
Posted by Neil Paine on December 3, 2010
This layup comes courtesy of S-R president Sean Forman, who wanted me to give a shout-out to his alma mater Grinnell College for setting an NCAA record -- namely, the record for most players to make at least one 3-pointer in a single game. They had 19 different guys make a three in their 137-103 rout of Faith Baptist Bible College, going 29-for-88 from downtown in the game. Apparently they had the record in sight at halftime:
"The Pioneers play a rotation with three shifts of five players, and shift changes on the first whistle after 35 seconds. Ahead 88-38 at the half, [Grinnell coach David] Arseneault told his team to go for the record.
'Nobody in the stands knew what we were doing,' he said. 'There were times when someone would have a wide-open layup and then just dribble past the basket and pass the ball out. People were looking at us like, "What is he doing?"'"

Nineteen guys in the SAME game?
Does the NCAA not have a rule on how many players you can dress for a game?

Exactly.

Hi Neil, I will be running the First Annual Basketball Blogger Awards sometime around the February 20th, 2011 NBA All Star game. Categories will include Best Overall Blog, Best Overall Post, Best Statistical Analysis, Most Innovative Post, Most Dedication to Readers, Best Team Blog and Best Use of Viral Videos. I was wondering if you would be interested in judging the awards and/or recommend specific blogs for nominations. Thank you for any help you can provide in this regard and keep up the good work!

I have mixed feelings about this. First off....its so unheard of to play 19 people in one game. It must have been a home game, because I am almost positive that NCAA rules allows only 15 players to travel to away games (may be wrong though). Even if that werent the case, isnt there some rule about how many players a men's team can have on their team? I thought a men's team could not have any more than the school's women's team..and 19 players seems just like too much. But whatever, it happened.
I feel bad for Faith Baptist Bible College...thats a hell of a beating. And it stings even more knowing that the team/coach deliberately ran the score up that much. On the other hand, a lot of coaches love plugging the stats and breaking records. Its an ego thing more than it is an ethical thing sometimes. I don't know what I would have done if I were in Arseneault's position. Kind of cocky, but sometimes you like to have a little fun.
My other question is how the hell did these two teams put up a combined 240 points in a college game?? It sounds like Grinnel was going off from the 3...but that score looks like FBBC answered a lot of times as well (especially in the 2nd half).

Consider this game to be similar to Wilt's 100 when one team decides not to play defense solely so they can get the ball back quicker to help break an offensive record.
