BBR Mailbag: Highest Percentage of Shots Being 3-Pointers
Posted by Neil Paine on November 8, 2010
On Saturday, Nathan wrote this to us:
"Through five games, James Posey has 20 FGA, 18 of which are 3PA, making for a staggering 90% rate of 3PA to FGA. Even though Posey went for a 70% clip last season, I see very little in his play (or being involved in a Jim O'Brien system) to suggest he shouldn't shatter that number this year. I was wondering either what the top 3PA to FGA ratios were..."
Among players who, like Posey, took at least 4 field-goal attempts per team game, here are the guys who saw the biggest proportion of their shots come from behind the 3-point arc:

I need to point out that regression to the mean will almost certainly bring down some of these astronomical 2011 rates, but even so, if Posey can stay above 76% he will definitely have a shot at breaking Damon Jones' "record".
Of course, 3-point attempts are far more prevalent now than they were when the shot was first introduced, so you could argue that Posey has a built-in advantage over players from the past. Which players had the highest 3PA/FGA rate relative to the league average?

Relative to average, Posey is still #1, but the season he's gunning for here is Thunder Dan Majerle's 2000 campaign. Keep jacking up those triples, James!

Neil - I'd be interested to see the top guys in the 3 pointers shot per FGA AND free throws shot per FGA weighted season to season. I'm not sure how that would be determined since you'd need to define what is a high percentage of 3s and what is a high percentage of free throws. Arbitrary cut-offs like 4+ threes w/ 8+ FTAs are hugely dominated by player seasons from the last 6 years (and Allen Iverson):

I'd like to know how much is due to the simple change in play style that calls for more three pointers overall, how much is just specific players happen to play that way, and how much is due to the rule change that says, "If a guy has his hand on your hip at the three point line, that's a foul." Where it used to say, "If a guy has his hand on your hip at the three point line, tough tacos."

Joe Hassett had more three point attempts than all but four teams, including the Jazz and Lakers combined. In 800 minutes.
