The (APBRmetric) Top 593 Players of 2012

Posted by Neil Paine on July 11, 2011

(Note: File this squarely under "Insane Ideas".) Watching one of the NFL Network's "Top 100 Players of 2011" shows this weekend, I was inspired to create a similar list for the NBA using APBRmetric stats. But why stop at 100? Instead, I ranked all 593 players who played at least 1 NBA game since 2008-09.

The Bird-Dirk Advanced Stat-off

Posted by Neil Paine on May 19, 2011

Bill Simmons and BS Report HoF guest Chuck Klosterman are discussing Larry Bird vs. Dirk Nowitzki in a podcast. Simmons says that the advanced stats place Dirk in the same category as Bird, perhaps even giving Dirk the edge, and he's not sure how he feels about this. I wasn't sure how I felt, either, […]

Layups: Sloan Conference Summaries

Posted by Neil Paine on March 10, 2011

I would have written a full summary of my trip to the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference last week, but A) I've been sick this week, and B) the guys at TrueHoop had it covered so well that my efforts would be totally extraneous: MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference bullets (Tim Varner) Malcolm Gladwell and […]

Searching For the NBA’s Version of the Charlie Sheen Fiasco

Posted by Neil Paine on March 2, 2011

In the wake of the ongoing Charlie Sheen chaos, I was (of course) racking my brain to find a comparable NBA analogy. Ideally you'd want to find a situation with the following parallels: It involves a winning team. Although I have personally never seen an episode, Sheen's show Two and a Half Men is apparently […]

How Would You Fill the “NBA Hall of Relevance”?

Posted by Neil Paine on February 24, 2011

I've been thinking about this concept for a while, but I want to throw it out there for the readers and see what they think... Everyone knows we already have a Basketball Hall of Fame. But from an NBA perspective, a lot of people think it's broken -- as the argument goes, too many non-NBA […]

Quantifying the NBA’s Reggie Cleveland All-Stars

Posted by Neil Paine on February 21, 2011

Everyone who has spent time studying historical player stats knows this phenomenon: You've seen a player's name for years, but you only know him as a series of numbers on a page. He retired before you were born, and you haven't even seen so much as a trading card with his picture on it... yet, […]

Layups: Block Recovery %

Posted by Neil Paine on January 19, 2011

Here's a good post from frequent BBR commenter Imadogg at his blog: Best Blockers in the League: Who Recovers the Block? Dogg looked at the top shot-blockers in the NBA by blocks per game, and did some digging through play-by-play data to determine how often the blocker's own team recovered the ball immediately after the […]

Layups: Book of Basketball Painting

Posted by Neil Paine on December 14, 2010

This is pretty sweet... It's a PDF version of the Book of Basketball painting ESPN commissioned John Alexander to create, featuring all of the players the top 50 players in Bill Simmons' Hall of Fame pantheon-pyramid. (Btw, somebody should make a Sporcle quiz where you identify the players from their depiction in the picture.)
